First Female Superintendent Elected in Korean Education
Mrs. Lim, Hye-Kyeong has been elected new Superintendent of Busan Metropolitan City Office of Education, becoming the first female to be elected as Superintendent. Superintendent-elect defeated the other 8 hopefuls in the June 2 election. Mrs. Lim, as 15th superintendent, will come into office from July in 2010, and assume the position for the next four years.
Promises and speech
In order to strengthen the public education in Busan, Mr. Lim has presented 10 main promises she aims to address: a crackdown on corruption in the education community, extended provision of free meals in primary and secondary schools, strengthening school unit's autonomy and responsibility, elevation of the students’ academic performance, and night care linking schools with children centers.
In an interview with the press after being elected, the winner briefly stated “in terms of the future, I would like to motivate themselves by supporting the deprived students in need from poor family, as a mother figure, with two hands: education and welfare.”
Education and career
Mrs. Lim was born in 1948 and was educated at Busan National University of Education before currently doing PhD in Social Welfare at Kyungsung University in Busan. She worked as a Senior Supervisor for the Special Education team and then as a head teacher in Naesan and Yongho Primary Schools.
Role of Superintendent
The Superintendent of BOE is the head of Busan Metropolitan City Office of Education and is ultimately responsible of the education policy and decisions implemented by the BOE. As head of the BOE the Superintendent also oversees the operation of the education service and over 600 primary, secondary schools, appoints heads of 5 regional offices, and shares a leadership role within Busan City with the Mayor of Busan. |
