[ College student mentors in after-school class ]
Busan Metropolitan City Office of Education has performed successfully a college student mentor program in after-school class in Busan. In 2008, 1,154 college students from six universities including Pusan National University participated in this project, and they were mentors of 3,155 students from elementary to high school in Busan. They taught students 2 ~ 3 times a week in after-school class. In the evaluation of the mentor program, the satisfaction of students taught by the mentors was high and their academic achievement was improved.
In the case of one middle school, the academic achievement of all participants in the program was improved. The advantages of the mentor program were that students were taught in a small class, which makes it possible for students to be taught at a suitable level. Moreover, students could ask the mentor about what they do not understand, which helped students study effectively. In addition, the mentor gave students advice on school life, college, career, and study. With this, students were instilled with self-confidence.
